Using an .edu email with the GitHub Student Developer Pack
What we know about GitHub's verification flow and how academic TLDs are treated.
The GitHub Student Developer Pack bundles free access to developer tools, plus GitHub Pro and Copilot benefits, for verified students aged 13 and over who are enrolled in a degree- or diploma-granting program.
How verification works
- Sign in to GitHub and open the Education benefits application page.
- Add and verify the email address your school issued you.
- Select your school, and allow GitHub to check your location.
- Upload proof of current enrollment, such as a dated student ID or transcript, if asked.
Does any academic-looking email work?
No. GitHub matches your email domain against the school you select and reviews your enrollment proof. A school email speeds things up, but it is neither required for every school nor sufficient on its own. Addresses that don't belong to your institution will not get you approved, and attempting it can lead to the application being denied.
Where an inbox from us helps
Developers use our inboxes to test registration and email-verification flows in their own apps, or to receive newsletters without exposing a personal address. If you are a real student, apply with your school email for the smoothest approval.
Tips for a fast approval
- Make sure your GitHub profile name matches the name on your documents.
- Use a document that shows today's academic term.
- Apply from your campus or home location without a VPN.
